A photographic journey through Malaysia — 2015 onwards

What began in 2015 as a two-year project to explore the 11 states of Peninsular Malaysia soon became something much bigger.

Travelling mainly by car, and deliberately avoiding the expressways and toll roads, I set out to discover the quieter roads, lesser-known places, everyday scenes that are so easily missed when travelling from A to B.

The inspiration came from books, magazines and documentaries about Malaysia, but particularly from the photography and travel writing that opened my eyes to just how much there was still to discover in the country I was living in.

The original plan was to photograph all 11 states over two years. As usual, things didn’t quite go according to plan! There were simply too many interesting places, people and photographic opportunities to fit into two years — so the journey continued.

What follows is a selection of those journeys, photographs and memories from 2015 onwards.

Some are well-known destinations seen from a different perspective; others are the hidden corners, roads and places I discovered along the way.

This is Malaysia as I saw it — photographed, travelled and remembered from the road.
